May 9, 2021: Aswini, a 27-year-old who has completed her PUC, has systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). The symptoms of the disease and recurrent relapses prevent her from earning an income. Her only sibling, a younger sister, is a student, and her mother a housewife. This family of four is supported solely by Aswini’s father, a daily wage earner. The approximate monthly cost of medicines for Aswini’s long-term treatment is Rs. 3.500, which excludes blood work.
